The New Year is an exciting time for young people
with all the parties and January Sales but is also brings
the dreaded Mock Exams! Get yourself prepared over the Christmas
Holidays using Diamond Dan's super revision tips so you can
have fun in January as you'll have half the hard work done!
Diamond Dan's Top Tips for Revising for Exams
- Plan Your Revision! - Making your own revision
timetable is a good start, remember to include times such
as when you're on the bus to school as short periods like
this can be useful for revising word lists, dates, or formulas.
- Get Your Room in Order! - Make sure you have a
clean, uncluttered work surface, a comfy chair and a quiet
area to work in with NO TV! This will all help with your
concentration and help keep your revision organised.
- Make your revision interesting! - Revise using
different techniques such as making your own revision cards,
making use of the internet, using coloured pens or highlighters,
reciting lists, or even asking a friend or parent to test
you.
- Learn from the past! - Past exam papers are really
useful for revision as sometimes the same questions are
asked each year but in a slightly different way. Do them
with a friend and check each other's answers then see where
you went wrong.
- Phone a friend! - Revising with a friend can be
fun. Why not prepare quizzes for each other, challenge yourselves
to a memory game or have a race to see who can get the right
answer the quickest.
Diamond Dan's Tips for Parents - (Show this to your
Mum or Dad!)
- Give Them a Break! - Ensure your child has regular
breaks from their studying and regular healthy meals and
snacks. Being cooped up in their room all day can be counterproductive.
Keep them well fuelled!
- Allow Some Surfing! - The internet is a valuable
tool for revising and making notes so try to let your child
use it for studying and not just for playing computer games
or talking with their friends.
- Keep Teachers in the Know! - If there has been
a family crisis, bereavement or if your child has been ill,
inform the school or the exam board as they may be entitled
to extra time during the exam or other special allowances.
- Keep Them Motivated! - Help your child with their
revision, offer to test them on different subjects, praise
them when they get answers right and try not to be too hard
on them when they make mistakes. Remember how stressful
it can be!
- Give Them a Carrot! - Not literally, but a reward
for completing tasks and sticking to their revision timetable
can be really motivational. Remember to tell them you're
proud of them as long as they do their best no matter what
results they get.
