Many parents and young people are confused about
the issue of transfer tests and academic selection.
The enclosed question and answer selection may
be of some help generally.
When will the current transfer tests/11 plus
end?
The transfer tests will be held for the last time in autumn
2008 for pupils transferring to post-primary schools in September
2009.
It will now be a matter for the Assembly to decide the form
of transfer, including whether the arrangements will be selective
or non-selective.
How will I know what arrangements will apply to my child?
Pupils who started P5 in September 2006 will be the last to
transfer to post-primary schools under the current arrangements.
The form of new arrangements will be determined by the Assembly.
You will be advised of the arrangements which will apply to
your child well in advance of the transfer process. The Department
of Education will continue to provide information about the
new arrangements to schools, education partners, parents and
pupils via information leaflets, newsletters, the media, and
the DE website.
What will happen now that the Northern Ireland Assembly
has been restored?
The Assembly was restored on 8 May 2007 and its members will
now have to reach agreement on new transfer arrangements,
to apply to pupils transferring in September 2010 and future
years, including whether those arrangements will be selective
or non-selective.
Can an alternative form of academic selection not replace
the transfer tests?
It will be a matter for the restored Assembly to consider
whether academic selection should continue, and if so, what
form it should take.
