Orangeism On Tour

April 2008

Community Education Officer Bro. David Scott, has reported that a number of local councils and community groups have shown a huge interest in the education programme being offered by the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland.

Recently Bro. Scott he has been facilitating information sessions and workshops right across Northern Ireland including Enniskillen, Carrickfergus, Londonderry and West Belfast. He has put the recent surge of interest down to the fact that community leaders realise the relevance of the Orange Order in a modern day society which is reflected by the huge number of people who either participate or support the work of the local lodges.

He said, "I am delighted that there is such an interest in the Orange Order and all that it has to offer Northern Ireland. I believe that it's good for the Institution to have the opportunity to outreach to the local community through the information sessions and lectures that we offer. It's important that we are able to address perceptions or misconceptions people have about the Orange Order in an educational way."

Bro. Scott believes that one of the more recent and more successful projects introduced by the Grand Lodge is the mini pocket guide to Orangeism which was launched in November. Initially 20,000 of the pockets guides were printed to help young people to get a better understanding of the Battle of the Boyne and the history surrounding the formation of the Orange Order.

Bro Scott said, "I'm delighted that the publication has been such a success and we're already thinking of a reprint, as over 13,000 of the booklets have been distributed to date and are proving to be a useful tool for students who are studying History or Citizenship at Key Stage II & III."

During April the education programme will be on tour in Strabane and Londonderry supporting the work of the Good Relations Officers in each of the respective Councils as part of Good Relations Week which runs from Monday 28th April to 2nd May 2008.
