The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland has handed over a cheque
for £42,000 to the Northern Ireland Kidney Research
Campaign.
The presentation was made by Robert Saulters, Grand Master,
at a ceremony in the Institution's headquarters, Schomberg
House, Belfast, on Wednesday, August 25.
In the last five years, the Orange Order has raised £210,000
for charities outside the Institution.
A cheque for £124,000 was given to Northern Ireland
Cancer Research, one of the biggest presentations ever made
to the organisation, and £45,000 was raised for a specially
designed mini-bus which was shipped to Orangemen in Togo for
use in the local community.
Robert Saulters, Grand Master said:
"I was delighted with the response to the latest Grand
Master's Appeal. It has been a pleasure to travel around Northern
Ireland and thank all the lodges which supported the Appeal
through a host of fund-raising activities.
"We raise money each year for Orange charities but members
have really taken to the idea of the Grand Master's Appeal
and it has been heartening to give large cheques to two very
important local charities as well as providing a mini-bus
for people in Togo.
"Charity work is a very important part of the Orange
Order and we hope that the money we raise will be put to good
use.
"Kidney Research is a charity that has benefited many
of our members, especially those who have had transplants,
and we wanted to put something back into the charity to help
the entire community."
