The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland has condemned the arson
attack on Kilmore Orange Hall between Moira and Lurgan.
A spokesman said:
"This is yet another attack on Protestant culture and
our way of life. We call upon anyone with the slightest piece
of information to contact the police and help them find the
culprits. Someone must know who is carrying out these attacks
on our premises across Northern Ireland. They have a moral
responsibility to pass on that information to the police.
"We would strongly appeal to the entire community not
to be sucked into any form of retaliation which is exactly
what these arsonists would like to see happening. The only
way to deal with these attacks is to help the police catch
the people responsible."
Kilmore Orange Hall is between Moira and Lurgan.
It was destroyed in an arson attack in 1991 and again in
July 2006. It was rebuilt on both occasions and extra security
measures were installed to protect the building, including
CCTV.
The hall is used by Kilmore LOL 237 and RBP 1144. It is also
used by a local band, a youth club and community groups.
On this occasion, the CCTV equipment was tampered with and
petrol poured into the front of the building. There was extensive
damage to the front porch of the hall.
Since the troubles began, 306 Orange Halls have been the
subject of arson attacks. Fifty four have been destroyed.
There have been 14 arson attacks this year, as well as a number
of other vandalism attacks.
