The longest running 'Battle of the Somme' Anniversary parade
will take place in East Belfast on Wednesday 1st July. The
parade, which will see over 35 Lodges and bands taking part,
will leave from Templemore Avenue at 7.30 pm.
The Worshipful District Master, Raymond Spiers commented
- "it is always a fantastic evening to experience the
atmosphere and see the thousands who come to take part and
support this event" - he added; "the Somme is written
into the DNA of the Unionist community, yet on 1st July we
not only commemorate those from this community who fought,
but those from all parts of this island and throughout the
Commonwealth who sacrificed their youth for King and country".
A short Act of Remembrance will be held when the head of
the parade reaches the War Memorial, Belmont Road, at approximately
8.30 pm. A wreath will be laid and the Last Post played as
the Parade salutes not only those who fought at the Somme,
but those who fought on the beaches of Normandy - 65 years
ago; those who served in Northern Ireland and those who continue
to fight in Afghanistan.
There will be two floats taking part in the parade, depicting
scenes from the period.
