The Orange Order has called on all unionists to exercise
their vote at the European elections next week.
The Order wished all unionist candidates well in the elections
and said that it hoped the unionist community would support
the democratic process by casting their votes.
"Democracy is only strengthened when people exercise
their vote and support its principles."
"We are urging our membership and their families particularly
to vote for the unionist candidates of their choice and in
order of preference. Use proportional representation to best
advantage to further the cause of unionism," a statement
from the Orange Order headquarters in Belfast said.
"We are also advocating that all unionists who are not
members of our Institution make their voice heard by taking
the time to cast their vote."
"The right to vote is a fundamental democratic right
not enjoyed in many other countries of the world. With the
right and privilege to vote comes the responsibility to do
so," the statement concluded.
"When the votes are counted there will be many who will
total the pro-union vote and the anti-union vote and no doubt
those who wish to trundle us into a united Ireland will make
political capital of any reduction in the percentage of the
total pro-Union vote."
