A delegation of Orangemen representing seven districts in
Co. Down tonight, January 29, met Banbridge District Council
to protest about the possible removal of the Union Flag from
the council offices.
The delegation was led by the Grand Secretary, Drew Nelson.
The Orangemen met the Council in response to the Equality
Impact Assessment of the Council's proposed policy on flags
and emblems.
The delegation pointed out that the consultation process
of the council had been deeply flawed and had not involved
the Orange Order or any of the Loyal Orders.
A spokesman for the Orange delegation said:
"What we are talking about here is the possible removal
of the Union Flag from the council offices in Banbridge. We
are very angry and believe this is part of the agenda to wipe
Britishness off the face of Northern Ireland. It is amazing
that the Orange Institution was not consulted about this.
"We were astonished to discover that the council had
already removed some emblems before the consultation was complete."
