Orangemen in Co. Down have not accepted an informal invitation
to take part in this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Downpatrick.
A spokesman for St. Patrick's LOL 688, Saintfield, said there
had been a verbal approach from two Ulster Unionist councillors
about participating in the parade. The lodge has decided not
to accept the invitation. It was unclear as to whether or
not they could carry their usual flags, banners and standards
and wear their regalia. It would be demeaning to impose a
condition that they could not do so.
Contrary to some media reports, there have been no negotiations
about taking part in the parade.
The lodge was also asked to take part in the parade last
year but turned down the offer when it was made clear they
could not wear their regalia.
A spokesman for Grand Lodge said decisions on taking part
in such parades were principally a matter for the local lodges
who understood the situation in their area. If people wanted
Orangemen to take part in parades they must accept their culture
and not try to change it.
It was important that any invitations would not stipulate
restrictive conditions which would have the effect of altering
the proud traditions of the Orange Institution.
The Orange Order does celebrate St. Patrick's Day in a number
of locations across Northern Ireland. These events focus on
St. Patrick's role as a major figure in the spread of Christianity.
