King
Billy has always been the hero of the Orange Order but times
are changing.
The Order has unveiled a new hero for the young and has launched
a competition to find a suitable name.
David Hume, Director of Services, explained:
"Earlier this year we launched a new logo for the Order
which was modern and vibrant. It has gone down extremely well.
"We are currently distributing 20,000 pop-out booklets
on the history of Orangeism to schools here. The response
has been fantastic and we may have to print more.
"All this encouraged us to think about how we relate
to the younger generation. We want to make the Orange Order
more relevant to the young and appear less stuffy.
"Our new Orange hero has been carefully designed and
is really a bit of good fun. Our research shows that he should
appeal to the young. He will appear on Christmas cards and
other merchandise which we sell or distribute.
"The only problem is that we do not have a name for
him so we decided to launch a competition. We hope that junior
members of the Order or indeed anyone who is interested will
send in suggestions to our headquarters at Schomberg House,
368 Cregagh Road, Belfast, BT6 9EY. The closing date for the
competition will be January 10.
"We are not sure if our new hero will last as long as
King Billy and he will certainly never replace him but there
is an opportunity for some youngster to win a prize and name
a hero who will be seen around the world."
