Co. Cavan Orange Hall Destroyed By Fire

31 October 2007

An Orange Hall in County Cavan has been destroyed by fire this evening, Wednesday, October 31.

The blaze was discovered around 8.00pm and destroyed Drumartin Orange Hall near Cootehill. The hall was last used by Orangemen on Friday night.

Members of the Orange Order are waiting to hear from Garda about the cause of the fire.

A spokesman said;
"We are not absolutely certain about what caused the fire but it is possible that this is part of the concerted attack on Orange property throughout Ireland. We will be working with Garda to establish exactly what happened."

Orange Halls in Cavan have been targeted by arsonists in the past. In 1981 Billlyhill Orange Hall was destroyed and in 2000 Brackey Orange Hall was destroyed.

Since the Troubles began, just under 300 Orange Halls have been the subject of serious arson attack throughout Ireland.

Senior members of Grand Lodge will visit the hall in the morning.
