A delegation of Orangemen from Portadown District have met
the Strategic Review of Parading Body, chaired by Lord Ashdown.
The delegation made a written submission to the body and
also discussed the impasse over the Drumcree Parade.
The Grand Orange Lodge and other Loyal Orders have already
met Lord Ashdown and his committee and presented them with
a 50 page submission.
Portadown District Master Darryl Hewittt said the meeting
had been very constructive.
"We were well received and they listened to the points
we made. We re-affirmed our position that Portadown District
is willing to enter into talks with the Garvaghy Road Residents
Coalition without pre-conditions.
"We also underlined the fact that the Parades Commission
is either unwilling or unable to arrange such a meeting or
organise an independent chairman. There is a mood within the
Northern Ireland community to resolve this issue and we are
certainly willing to play our part in that.
"The people who seem incapable of doing anything positive
are the Parades Commission and they have been exposed as being
a totally ineffectual organisation.
"We will await with great interest the findings of the
Ashdown Committee."
