Orangemen in Northern Ireland have bought a mini-bus for
their fellow brethren in the African country of Togo.
More than £45,000 was raised in the Grand Master's
Appeal to buy the specially designed mini-bus. It will be
shipped to Togo in the next few days.
There are approximately 300 Orangemen in Togo and a similar
number in the neighbouring country of Ghana. Orangeism spread
there through Christian missionaries.
"We bought our brethren in Togo a mini-bus in 1990 but
it has really come to the end of its usefulness, so we decided
to replace it," explained Grand Master Robert Saulters.
"This new bus has been specially designed so that it
can cater for wheelchairs and can also be used as an ambulance.
"Its main purpose will be for evangelistic work but
it will also have a wider use within the community we are
sending it to.
"The money was raised all over Ireland by Orangemen
at a variety of events. Our charity work is a very important
part of the Orange Order and I am delighted to be able to
send this bus on its way to help fellow Orangemen in Togo.
"The project would not have been possible without a
lot of hard work from a lot of people and I want to place
on record my sincere thanks to them all."
