Buses Attacked

12 July 2007

The Grand Orange Lodge has condemned the attack on buses taking Orangemen through Armagh this evening.

Bricks, stones and bottles were thrown at four buses as they travelled on Friary Road.

They were thrown by a crowd of between 30 and 40 young people from the grounds of a GAA club. A number of people were injured by flying glass and it is understood some of them needed medical treatment and one person was taken to hospital.

The buses were bringing Orangemen back from the demonstration at Loughall.

Stones were also thrown at a number of private cars containing spectators who had attended the demonstration.

A spokesman for Grand Orange Lodge expressed sympathy to the people who were attacked.

"This is not the first time that buses carrying Orangemen have been attacked in this part of Armagh. It was a disgraceful and violent attack on people who were returning from celebrating their culture and heritage with their friends. The amount of missiles thrown would indicate that a considerable amount of planning went into the attack. We would expect the PSNI to carry out an investigation into the incident"
