Mercer Ward is an Orangeman who is outstanding in his field!
The County Down man has been in Listullycurran Truth Defenders
LOL 616 for over 30 years and is Past Master of the lodge.
And Mercer also has a major ploughing title under his belt.
For the County Down builder and small farmer is current European
Vintage Reversible Ploughing Champion, a title he won at the
championships last year in the Isle of Man.
Mercer, who lives near Hillsborough, will be defending his
title in Wales in September, and will take with him the good
wishes of brethren across Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
As well as the seat on his vintage DEXTA, Bro. Ward also
sits on community bodies in his native area, and enjoys the
fellowship of his brethren at Listullycurran outside Dromore.
Mercer is one of many Orangemen who are prominent in their
local communities, or in a wider sense.
Famous Orangemen from the past will be featuring in the new
Grand Lodge exhibition "Heroes from History", which
will be launched next month at Schomberg House in East Belfast.
Figures including Dr. Thomad Barnardo, painter and politician
Thomas Henderson MP, William Johnston of Ballykilbeg, John
A McDonald, Canadian prime minister, Robert Quigg, First World
War VC winner and many others will feature in the exhibition,
which will include banners, paintings, and many other artefacts.
Also included in the exhibition will be "local heroes",
prominent Orangemen from today, including Bro. Ward.
