Orange leaders from across the British Isles have taken part
in a conference in Glasgow.
The landmark event is the first conference on such a scale
to be held by the three British Isles jurisdictions and included
Orange leaders and officials from Scotland, Ireland and England.
Over 40 senior leaders discussed a wide range of issues including
the state of the Union, recruitment and co-operation within
the Institutions, and religious affairs.
The two-day conference included presentations, discussion
papers, and group discussions, and is now likely to become
an annual event.
It is also understood that work groups may also be formed
to deal with some of the matters raised at the weekend event.
The Irish delegation was headed by Grand Master Robert Saulters,
Deputy Grand Master Edward Stevenson, Grand Secretary Drew
Nelson, Grand Treasurer Mervyn Bishop and Grand Lecturer Sidney
McIldoon.
County Grand Masters were also included in the line-up, with
senior Orange officials Robert McLean of Scotland and Dr.
David Hume of Ireland being present.
The decision to host such a conference arose out of suggestions
from the Imperial Orange Council.
Chairman of the event, Ian Wilson, Grand Master of Scotland,
said that the event had been highly positive and encouraging
and that it now needed to be built upon for the future.
Grand Master of Ireland, Robert Saulters, said that the conference
had been extremely worthwhile and had shown many areas for
co-operation between the British Isles jurisdictions.
