North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has welcomed the commitment
by Enterprise Trade and Investment Minister Nigel Dodds to
developing the tourism potential of the Orange heritage and
culture. Speaking after receiving an answer to an Assembly
question Mervyn Storey said:
In his reply to my question Minister Dodds confirmed
that he has asked the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to work
with his department to develop a cultural heritage strategy
which will include the Loyal Orders. He also outlined measures
such as the potential relating to a Williamite Trail.
These are welcome developments and I would encourage
the Minister to continue to explore every possible avenue
to further develop and enhance the contribution the Loyal
orders make to our culture and heritage and to further exploit
this as a tourist opportunity.
The Ministers commitment to this kind of development
stands in very stark contrast to those who remain determined
to attack the culture, ethos and heritage of their Protestant
neighbours.
It is very clear that this again places a major onus
on the government to bring forward the necessary proposals
to deal effectively with this ongoing and orchestrated problem.
Failure on the part of government will hinder the work being
carried out by DETI.
The government now needs to step up to the mark and fulfil
its responsibilities to ensure that the positive work carried
out by the Loyal Orders and the attempts by DETI to utilise
this for the benefit of our tourist industry is enabled to
succeed.
