Belfast City Council's Youth Forum has visited Schomberg
House for a tour and workshop on the Grand Orange Lodge of
Ireland. The day was hosted by David Scott, Community Education
Officer with the Institution and the group were warmly greeted
by the Grand Master.
The Youth Forum is made up of 36 young people from all across
Belfast who serve for a 2 year term. They have 3 subcommittees
on Health, Facilities and Good Relations.
The trip to Schomberg House was organised as part of their
work in developing and promoting Good Relations. The previous
day, they had visited Croke Park to learn about the history
of the GAA and their trip to Schomberg House sought to look
at the history and significance of the Orange Order within
the broad Protestant community.
"The young people who took part in these events are
representative of their communities and they also have a leadership
role as well. By informing themselves of the background, issues
and challenges facing organisations such as the GAA and the
Orange Institution, the young people will become well placed
to play a full part in everyone's efforts to carve out a shared
future in which cultural diversity and tolerance for differences
can be fostered and nurtured," said Good Relations Officer
David Robinson of Belfast City Council.
